Now Then Announcement

After a memorable two years publishing 12 issues, it is with a heavy heart that we’ve taken the decision to discontinue the printed Manchester edition of Now Then magazine for the time being.

We are certain that this is by no means the end of our aims to encourage and provide a platform for the independent art, trade, music, writing and local news that we have stood for from the outset. The popularity of the magazine and the positive feedback we receive with each issue is both humbling and testament to everyone who has contributed in any way, shape or form. So we are aiming to regroup and explore our options for the future.

The fact is that it is a difficult task to raise the revenue to sustain a free magazine project with our ethos and print quality. Compromising that ethos and quality has never been an option.

We will be maintaining a presence in the Manchester area, with events and other projects, so keep your eyes peeled for the whens and wheres and for opportunities to get involved.

We are also planning to continue publishing a new issue every two months on our new website, so if you have something to say or would like to highlight a local campaign, good cause or community project then get in touch. We are still here as a source of independent citizen journalism.

Finally, we’d like to offer our thanks to everyone who has been involved up to now. We’d love to hear your stories from the past two years that we’ve been in print, or ideas and suggestions for the future.

So, for now you won’t be seeing us in print, but we've not given up and you’ve not heard the last of us.

NOW THEN | ISSUE 11 | A MAGAZINE FOR MANCHESTER

We have all sorts of news to share along with this issue, our 11th. The final few drops of our ale collaboration with Marble Brewery are out and about (try the Marble Arch) after an incredibly successful run. Here's the photo blog of our brewing day again.

We have also launched our shiny new website, which will host each magazine's writing online. This time it features the Tycho interview, Mr Hass's art work, news, reviews and opinion, including features on Central Library, Urban Psychosis and nutritional reports - all the same as the printed magazine but with extra videos and links.

On Saturday 26 July we'll be in Moston for a free event, which is the area on the other side of Simon Bray's lens in our issue 11 photo feature. Running 2pm-7pm, the event includes a free DJing workshop run by Mind On Fire and Taste The Difference, followed by a special live soundtrack performance by beatboxer and vocal sculptor Jason Singh. If you don't know what a vocal sculptor is or does, then make you come armed with questions to ask him after his short talk about his craft. Issue 8 of Now Then's Manchester edition hit the streets earlier this month weighing a little more than the previous seven issues - this time we've increased to 52 pages, allowing room for plenty more citizen journalism, art, comment and review.

Among the pages this time we have interviews with musicians Sam Amidon and Akkord, actor Rob Ward and this issue's featured artist Robbie Porter. Manchester Mule's investigation into the PFI schemes devised around the regeneration of Miles Platting make for interesting reading, as does Huw Wahl's rallying cry for collaboration in art, echoing the voice of the anarchist Herbert Read. Now Then Manchester Sales Position

We have an exciting opportunity going at Now Then magazine and you might be just the person we're looking for.

The position is a part time sales role for a bi-monthly magazine, and will involve a combination of researching new potential clients, sales administration, and face to face sales meetings with clients.

Sales and marketing experience preferred, particularly within the media industry, but more important is a strong commitment to ethical business and independent trading. For us, how we operate is just as important as what we produce so we're looking for someone with a genuine and passionate commitment to independent trade, art and thought, as well as to Manchester itself.

The role will demand self-motivation and strong organisation skills for working independently and to agreed deadlines, but also the ability to work within a team and be able to listen to, suggest and develop ideas within the team.

We are not accepting CVs for this position - please fill in this enquiry form and we'll be in touch.

Applications will be open until Friday 27th December and interviews will be held at the start of January. [NB - this has been extended from 5th December deadline.]

The successful applicant will be paid for six days per month (40 hours), with bonuses available on a commission basis. If you are selected for an interview a full job description and salary details will be emailed to you.

NOW THEN. ISSUE 7. A MAGAZINE FOR MANCHESTER.

Issue 7 has now been distributed across the city in the usual independent retailers, bars, venues, libraries, galleries, opticians, doctors and so on. The artist this time, Kris Kuksi, has a finely tuned eye for the intricate, producing assemblages of stunning detail of all shapes and sizes. Elsewhere, there are articles on home brewing, wasted plastics and local publishing houses, plenty of reviews, and interviews with poet Hollie McNish, director Ian Townsend and electronic musicians The Orb.

Work for Now Then Manchester

We are looking for two people to join our advertising team:

Head of Advertising

A new Manchester-based, monthly magazine is looking for a lively, enthusiastic and driven individual to head our advertising sales team. Applicants must be willing to work to strict deadlines and possess a strong interest in independent traders, local arts, entertainment and culture. You would organise targets, co-ordinate a small sales team and report to the Project Manager.

Previous experience in advertising sales is desirable but not essential. The position entails planning of monthly sales and marketing strategy, updating the sales database regularly, developing relationships with clients, amending sales pitches depending on the target, collating artwork and maintaining accounts. It also requires the ability to operate basic Microsoft Office programmes (eg. Excel), and some design skills would be preferable. This position is ideal for recent graduates seeking work in advertising, and would be paid on a pro rata basis.

The ideal candidate would be flexible and able to work 25-30 hours per week during busy sales weeks for the primary deadline, before switching focus to chasing artwork for the final deadline towards the end of the month whilst preparing for the following month.

Advertising Assistant

A new Manchester-based, monthly magazine is looking for a lively, enthusiastic and driven individual to work as part of our advertising sales team. Applicants must be willing to work to strict deadlines and possess a strong interest in independent traders, local arts, entertainment and culture.

Previous experience in advertising sales is desirable but not essential. The position entails regular communication with the Head of Advertising, working towards sales targets, developing relationships with clients, amending sales pitches depending on the target and following a monthly sales and marketing strategy. This position is ideal for recent graduates seeking work or work experience in advertising, and would be paid on a pro rata basis.

Hours of work would be weighted towards the first two weeks of the month, with 20-25 hours required to achieve sales targets before the deadline.
